Meet the Staff

  • Bishop B. Curry, III, DVM, DACLAM
    Owner/Veterinarian

Dr. Curry was born in Sulphur Springs, TX. During his high school years, the family moved to Marshall, TX where he graduated in 1970. The same year he entered the 6-year pre-veterinary program at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL and received his BS degree in Agricultural Sciences in 1974 and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1976.

After 19 years in private practice in the Houston area and Godley TX, he was selected as a resident in the NIH-sponsored Laboratory Animal Sciences Program at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. During the ensuing three years he completed the Comparative Pathology curriculum which included extensive work with a molecular cardiology research team. Dr. Curry later received specialty board certification as a diplomate in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine which is a group of ~1000 veterinarians worldwide dedicated to supporting biomedical research and pharmaceutical development.

Leaving UT Southwestern, Dr. Curry joined the Comparative Medicine Department at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and from there was recruited to positions of increasing responsibility starting with Charles River Laboratories in Massachusetts, National Cancer Institute in Frederick and Bethesda, MD., Pfizer Pharmaceutical in CT, Boston University, and now Director of Comparative Medicine Intuitive Surgical in Sunnyvale, CA.

In 2012 he and his wife Verna purchased the former Reed Veterinary Clinic. Over the next 4 years he and the staff led by Clinic Manager, Tammy McEnturff worked to grow the practice, adding boarding/grooming, marketing tools, and other improvements.

Because of Dr. Curry’s love for private practice and research and development, meant in his absence, he needed a veterinarian with mixed animal experience that also loved the northeast Texas area. Dr. Jim Hanson fit that bill and joined the practice in February of this year. We are excited to have him. He and his family love and enjoy the Mt. Vernon area. Dr. Curry plans to be in research a few more years in the San Francisco bay area before returning to Mt Vernon to lend Dr. Hanson at least a part-time hand in the practice.

All of us here at Mt. Vernon Veterinary Clinic look forward to serving your small animal, farm animal, and grooming/boarding needs. Give Dr. Hanson a call! He would love to talk to you!
